Website Analysis - By Cameron/Charlie

Pictures Taken During Filming (Production Stage) - By Charlie

This particular post doesn't really hold much significance apart from the fact it highlights some of the locations in which we filmed in. However it does show how these locations would have successfully linked to the conventions of pop genre when we produced our music video due to the fact that many of the pictures depict characters having fun at house parties. As well as the bright lights and vibrant colours of central London, carrying possible clubbing connotations, once again conforming explicitly to the typical conventions of pop genre.

Explanation For FINAL Digi Pak Changes - By Cameron

This allowed me to recognise the previous flaws in which I had made when producing the DigiPak product, meaning it would deter me from reverting back to any of these flaws again. It further shows the development of my creativity skills over the entire course of the production of the DigiPak, due to the specific changes I personally carried out in order to fulfill the target audiences entertainment needs more successfully. Additionally to this, I recognised how the conventions of the final DigiPak design had to conform to the conventions of pop, also seen on the website in order to sustain a similar house style throughout all three products with the use of bright vibrant colours etc.

DigiPak Insert - By Cameron

After the production of the front, disk and back cover of the DigiPak, it was decided that an insert should also be produced to accompany the various existing covers created for the DigiPak, to further emphasise its purpose and to increase entertainment for the target audience. The insert consists of 5 pages which the target audience of teens to adults would be able to freely navigate, actively consuming this product. The insert had to also conform to the conventions of pop genre in order to link to the rest of the DigiPak, as well as the Website and Music Video.

Therefore the use of orange as a bright vibrant colour was used, as pop genre music videos are commonly associated with vibrancy in order to provoke a positive emotional response from the viewer. Similarly, the use of the bright colours within the insert have this same effect on thr audience, which causes an increase in interest, provoking them to want to find out more about the product by listening to and watching the music video. Additionally, the use of the about page and group page acts as a way to open up to the audience, sharing aspects of their personal lives in order to appear as being a trustworthy group to aspire to. This trust due to the invitation into the groups personal lives further provokes interest from the target audience influencing them to further view the product.

It also establishes a relationship between the group and target audience, meaning that the audiences trust is increased further, provoking them into viewing not only the DigiPak, but the Mission 808 brand as a whole. The use of the group and about page also highlights to the audience who the main stars of the product are. This creates star identity relating to Richard Dyers star theory in that the product constructs the star through presentation. In this case the characters are presented clearly on pne page with pictures of their faces, as well as descriptions regarding their ages, and some of their interests, suggesting that they are the main stars of Mission 808, and the main focus of the music video. This also makes it easier for the audience to idolise the stars as they are aware that these characters have a bigger significance than any of the other people seen throughout the music video. The pictures on the last two pages also act as a way of inviting the audience in to share the personal experiences of the group, as the pictures depict the fun times they have had as well as some examples of the ways they shot the music video.

This not only establishes a relationship with the audience as previously mentioned, but also conforms to the conventions of pop genre, as many of the pictures depict parties and having fun, which our music video solely revolves around. But it also relates to the idea of being happy and having fun which is a key convention of many pop genre videos, depicting people having fun in order to provoke a positive perhaps euphoric emotional response from the audience. Finally, the insert as whole which collaborates with the rest of the DigiPak as well as the Website and Music Video, establishes brand awareness to the audience, as the conventions of pop genre which it specifically relates to link very closely to that of the DigiPak and Music video. For example the text is similar to the website, as well as the use of bright orange as its main colour which is also similar to the website and music video as bright colours are used as one of the more common conventions of pop in which they all conform to.

Due to the similar bright colours, positive emotional response provoking imagery, and text type seen throughout the insert in collaboration with the DigiPak, the Website and Music video, allows the audience to recognise the brand and relate their positive experiences from consuming the products, with the Mission 808 brand.

Explanation For The Changes In The DigiPak - By Cameron

This post was useful in highlighting the extent of the changes which had to be made to this second DigiPak draft. It highlights my developing creativity and determination skills due to the willingness I have shown to act creatively, in order to improve on the flaws of the previous DigiPak design to fulfill the audiences entertainment needs more successfully.

NEW DigiPak Design (Changes Made) - By Cameron

New Design:

Old Design:

(NOTE: This still wasnt the final chosen design for the DigiPak product due to the fact that the conventions didn't successfully conform to pop genre as we wanted it. However despite the further changes which had to be made, it shows an example of the development of my creativity skills due to the fact that I recognised the flaws in this design. Therefore I actively went about making creative changes in order to conform to the conventions of pop genre more successfully in order to fulfill the target audiences entertainment needs.)

Location, Performers, and Mise en Scene - By Charlie

This post proved to be very useful due to the fact that it helped me gain a broader in depth understanding of how to successfully consider and apply mise en scene to our music video product. This post highlighted the importance of the chosen locations in which we filmed in, as well as highlighting the character behavior needed to successfully conform to the conventions of pop genre. It allowed us to consider any possible changes which needed to be made during the production and post production stages, to ensure that the mise en scene of our music video product successfully conformed to the conventions of pop genre.

End Of Production Survey - By Charlie

The end of production survey was useful in that it allowed us to understand exactly how contempt the audience felt in terms of their entertainment needs being satisfied by our products overall, including both the DigiPak and Website as well as the music video and our blogs. This final feedback was useful as it pointed out any small things needed to be changed or dealt with in any of the products including the blog.

Analysis Of Existing Products: Calvin Harris (DigiPak) - By Charlie

This post was useful to me as it once again acted as another example of how the conventions of pop genre could be applied to a DigiPak product in a real life existing circumstance. This further solidified my understanding of the technique needed in order to successfully add these conventions to my own DigiPak. Similarly to the Tinie Tempah DigiPak previously analysed, I found that the use of bright colours is a continuous convention of pop genre seen throughout most DigiPaks, therefore this has influenced me into considering emphasising the bright vibrant colours as one of the more noticeable main conventions of my own DigiPak product.

Analysis Of Existing Products: Tinie Tempah (Disc-Overy DigiPak) - By Cameron

This analysis of an existing pop genre DigiPak allowed me to focus in depth on how the conventions of pop genre are applied to DigiPaks in real life existing circumstances. This broadened my knowledge and understanding of the various conventions commonly seen in pop genre DigiPaks too, in this case particularly bright vibrant colours and the presentation of the star in order to present a figure of significance for the audience to idolise conform to. Furthermore this also acted as inspiration for the creation and development of my own DigiPak by using conventions of pop genre in a similar way.

The below is all what we have discussed during a scheduled group meeting on January 22nd, 2014:

Things we have completed since last meeting:
Filming of footage from Central London
- Gathered all the photos that we had taken during filming in order to put them on the 'Gallery' page of the website.
- The website has been finished however the only thing left to do on it is to upload the music video to it, once we have finished editing.

Things that still need to be completed:
- Posts on the blog for the website and the digipak
- Editing the footage that we have acquired from the different locations and to put it into sequences to go into the music video.
- Evaluation questions (will be starting next week)

Digipak:
The digipak has been completed but still needs some more posts about it uploaded to the blog.

Website:
The website is now fully completed buts can not yet be published because we still need to post the music video that we create, on the site upon completion.

The below is all what we have discussed during a scheduled group meeting on December 1st, 2013:

Things we have completed since last meeting:
- Filming for all party locations
- Digipak design and production

Things that still need to be completed:
- Filming of footage from Central London
- Completion of Digipak design itself
- Finish editing the rest of the video once we have filmed the footage from London

Digipak:
- The digipak is now completed, however we still have to upload some extra posts to the blog relating to the digipak.

Website:
- There is only a few minor tweaks that need to made to the website itself, however similarly to the digipak, we still have some extra posts that we still need to upload before it can be fully completed.

We still need to complete our evaluation tasks but this will be completed after christmas.

Production Meeting Notes For October 4th 2013 - By Charlie

The below is all what we have discussed during a scheduled group meeting on October 4th, 2013:

Things that we have completed so far:
- Filming at three party locations (Rykia, Charlye and Harry party)
- Filming in limo
- Photos that we have taken at the party locations

Things that still need to be completed:
- Filming of individual shots
- More filming at other locations so that we can use the same type of setting but at a different location.
- Website planning and creation
- Digipak planning and creation

Digipak:
- We spoke about possibly making the digipak mostly black and white, with the front cover background being black and having a group picture on the front with the name of the album and the names of two of our big/upcoming songs.
- The insert will also conform to the colour scheme with the black background and white font.
- The CD itself will be black with 'Heads Will Roll' written in white font across the front and a small design if it is possible to fit on there.
- The back cover will be similar to the insert with a black background and a white font - listing all the names of the tracks on the CD, and the barcode and additional information at the bottom.

Website:
- The website will be more colourful than the digipak, this is to conform to the stereotypical representation of a band in the dance genre.
- We also want the website to be where people to go should they need information, so will try to make it as aesthetically pleasing as possible.

Change Of Filming Location - By Charlie

As shown in previous posts, we had planned to record footage at Brighton pier. However, due to weather conditions in October and the Brighton pier security team only allowing us to film on weekdays which we cannot make due to attending sixth form, we were unable to travel to Brighton to record any footage.

Despite this, we have chosen to go into London to film footage, which is instead of going to Brighton. We travelled to Oxford Circus, Picadilly Square, Trafalgar Square, Southbank (The London Eye), China Town and Brixton in which we recorded scenes to go towards our music video. London is a very busy and vibrant city allowing us to capture scenes that would our target audience could relate to even more.
Now that we are in the post-production stage I think we have realised that we have benefitted from some even better footage than we may have been able to get in Brighton, so are happy we made the decision to film in London instead.

Website Market Genre Research - By Cameron

This post was useful to me as it allowed me to extend my knowledge and understanding of pop genre as a whole, but in particular the dance sub genre of it in which our products including our website were going to conform to. Due to this it allowed me to understand particular conventions associated with dance pop genre and influenced me to incorporate these into our own website during its production. Furthermore it allowed me to recognise the age range in which dance pop genre is typically associated and targeted towards, allowing me to understand how to incorporate the conventions of dance pop genre into the website in order to successfully apply to the target audience.

Treatment For DigiPak - By Shondelle

Treatment for Digipak – Mission 808: Heads Will Roll:

Initial Idea:

The initial idea for our digipak is similar to the website, we want to keep the theme of bright lights and the party scene which is highlighted throughout our video, in our digipak as well. In order to keep this theme alive in our digipak, we are going to use more unusual, colourful effects for our front cover, such as the Andy Warhol effect, by splitting it into four section, with a face of the band in each of the four sections, to make this more colourful and interesting we are going to replace all the natural colours with bright, neon colours in order to give it a ‘pop-art’ effect. We decided on this through much research on different artistry styles and interesting images that we could incorporate into our own piece of art. The text used on the album cover will be a sort of script writing text, to give it more of an edge, and an unusual look to it. We decided on this style, in order to stand out from other albums in stores, so that when people are browsing through the music isle of a supermarket or digital store, this album will catch their eye before any other. The back cover of the digipak will just remain black, with the track listing and copyright rules in white text that matches the front text style. We have decided on this as it contrasts the front cover, and gives a slight difference to the rest of the theme, so that it’s not too loud or over bearing.

Finally, the insert within the digipak, will have the same front cover as the front album cover, and a picture of the band together on the back. Inside we will include:

  • Information on each track, when and where it was recorded, who wrote the song and produced the music.
  • Images and snap shots of each track being made and produced.
  • Images of behind the scenes when creating the videos.
  • Lyrics to the two most popular songs ‘Heads Will Roll’ and ‘Crash’.
  • A list of people responsible for producing and writing the songs.
  • Copyright details.

Treatment For Website - By Shondelle

Treatment for Website – Mission 808: Heads Will Roll:

Initial Idea:

The initial idea for our website is to create an illusion of bright lights and the party scene, by using bright, neon colours against a black background so that they stand out against everything else. We decided on this idea through our video, as we are focusing largely on technical aspects such as natural bright lights, and artificial colourful lighting, so we thought we would follow this idea through to the website, in order to keep the theme of youth culture and night life alive throughout all of our work. The font used is to be bold and, again, stand out from everything else, not only because it fits in with our theme, but so that people are constantly reminded of the name of the band, so it stays in their mind and sticks out above everything else and when they leave the site, they will remember what it’s called. On our website we will include information about:

  • The band, e.g how/when they started out, who they are signed by etc.

  • Tour dates, when/where they will be touring and links to ticket websites.

  • Information on all their albums and song.

  • Behind the scenes action e.g. making the videos and songs in studio.

  • A gallery, including videos and behind the scenes and snap shots of their most popular videos, and also some insight into their everyday lives, to make the audience feel as if they have a personal relationship with the band.

We gained some inspiration for our website, from other celebrities website’s such as Ellie Goulding, who also used the feature of having pictures of her everyday life in order to connect with her audience, and make them feel as if they are a part of her life also, so we are deciding to use this idea for our own website. Other celebrities such as David Guetta have a live twitter feed on their website, which also is a very effective idea as it will direct the audience over to twitter which not only will gain more followers for the artist, but is advertising the social networking website itself also, and introduces it to other people that may not have twitter and will therefore persuade them to get twitter, as one of their favourite artists uses it, so this will be another feature used on our website.

Final DigiPak Design - By Cameron

(NOTE: This did not become the final DigiPak design due to a number of flaws and how unsuccessfully the product conformed to the conventions of pop genre. However I did try to justify this first DigiPak draft, therefore it acts as the basis for improvements which I eventually made. It highlights the development of my knowledge and understanding of the conventions of pop in relation to the DigiPak.)
